Preparing for successful breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is an important step in the lives of a mother and her baby. It's a natural and beneficial way to nourish and bond with your child. However, for this experience to be seamless, it's essential to prepare properly.

It is also important to prepare for breastfeeding in a pleasant and calm way, because it will be a magical step but it requires patience at the beginning.

In this blog, we will walk you through the steps to successfully prepare for breastfeeding.

1. Learn about breastfeeding

The first step in preparing for breastfeeding is to educate yourself on the subject. Read articles, read books, listen to other mothers' stories, and consult with health professionals to understand the importance of breastfeeding for your baby and for yourself. But above all, trust yourself!

There are indeed many benefits for you, for your baby, and for the environment! But also many myths and judgments, so it's important to be informed so as not to be afraid.

2. Surround yourself with your loved ones

Talk to your partner, your loved ones, or even other moms… listen to your instincts and be prepared to accept help when you need it (sometimes accepting help isn't easy! Especially when you're used to being able to do everything)

3. Familiarize yourself with breastfeeding positions

There are different breastfeeding positions, such as the Madonna hold, the cradle hold, and the rugby ball hold. Learn about these different positions to determine which one is most comfortable for you and your baby.

4. Establish early contact with your baby

Skin-to-skin contact is very important from birth. The simple act of placing your baby on your chest helps stimulate the sucking instinct. This special moment also helps strengthen the emotional bond between you and your child. Don't hesitate to ask your midwife about this.

5. Create a supportive environment and provide the tools to help you

Make sure you have a quiet and comfortable place to breastfeed your baby. Provide pillows and cushions for support; relaxation and comfort are essential for a peaceful breastfeeding session.

If you want to bottle feed occasionally to free up some time (sometimes just getting out for a few minutes of fresh air can be good for a new mom), bank milk for when you go back to work, or give your partner the opportunity to feed your baby, you can buy a breast pump and containers to store the milk in the fridge.

6. Prepare yourself mentally

It's important to be mentally prepared in case of difficulties. Build your self-confidence and remember that you are not alone. You can always find support from health professionals or breastfeeding support groups.

Preparing for breastfeeding is important for a successful experience. By educating yourself, familiarizing yourself with different breastfeeding positions, preparing your breasts, and creating a supportive environment, you give yourself the best chance of succeeding in this wonderful stage of motherhood.

Remember to seek support if needed and remember that breastfeeding is a unique and precious journey between you and your baby.
