Why are some breastfeeding attempts still failing in France in 2024?
Breastfeeding is a topic that is often debated in France.
Although many mothers want to breastfeed, a number of them encounter difficulties and end up giving up prematurely. But what are the reasons for these breastfeeding failures? Why is this still happening in 2024, you might ask? Well, we may think it's a complex subject, but in reality, the reasons are obvious.
First, it's worth mentioning the lack of adequate support from medical staff and healthcare professionals. Too often, mothers are left to their own devices, without the information and guidance they need to overcome the obstacles they encounter (this was my case, for example, with no information about growth spurts that would jeopardize my breastfeeding).

According to a recent study published in the journal Pediatrics, the main reasons for breastfeeding failure in France are:
- lack of support from medical staff,
- the difficulties encountered by mothers in learning breastfeeding techniques,
- social pressure,
- and a quick return to work.
Indeed, many mothers feel alone and helpless when faced with the challenges of breastfeeding. A lack of support from healthcare professionals and loved ones can also play a major role in the decision to abandon breastfeeding.
For example, Caroline, a young mother of two and Balulu client, struggled to find support when she encountered difficulties breastfeeding her second child. “I felt lost and helpless. Healthcare professionals didn’t always seem trained to help me, and my family didn’t always understand my choices. I eventually gave up breastfeeding out of frustration.”
Additionally, social pressure surrounding breastfeeding can also weigh heavily on new mothers. Between prying eyes in public places and comments from loved ones, some mothers feel judged and end up giving up to avoid criticism.
Keep believing in yourself, in your strength, and in your ability to succeed. You are an amazing mom and you deserve all the support and encouragement in the world. Don't give up; you're on the right track. You are an incredible mom, never forget that.

Finally, returning to work quickly can also be a barrier to continuing breastfeeding. Many mothers have to juggle their professional lives with breastfeeding, which can be a source of stress and logistical difficulties. In particular, the use of breast pumps with cords, which are often very heavy to transport, can curb mothers' desire to breastfeed or put them in a situation of discomfort. We recommend using portable breast pumps without cords instead.
But don't despair! There are solutions and resources that can help you overcome challenges and achieve breastfeeding success. Don't hesitate to turn to breastfeeding professionals, such as lactation consultants or La Leche League leaders, who can provide the support and guidance you need.
Let's not forget that every experience is unique, and the most important thing is the well-being of both mother and child. Don't hesitate to surround yourself with caring people and seek help if necessary. You can do it, don't give up!
With all my support and encouragement,
Alba, co-founder of Balulu and lactation consultant in training.
